For the first time in its history, the IKBFU was ranked among the world’s best universities by Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2021. There are 1500 universities included in the ranking with 48 Russian ones among them. Despite the fact that this is the first when the IKBFU was ranked, our university was ranked higher than the Sechenov University, the Lobachevsky University, the ETU “LETI”, etc.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings is one of the three most respected academic rankings, along with QS and ARWU. The inclusion of the IKBFU in THE WUR is a well-deserved achievement for the university, testifying to the high quality of its educational and research activities.

The rating is published annually by the British edition of Times Higher Education, specializing in issues of higher education. The methodology of the rating is based on the calculation of 13 indicators, grouped into five groups, reflecting the key areas of higher education institutions:

  • Teaching (learning environment);
  • Research (volume, income, and reputation);
  • Citations (impact of research);
  • International interactions (staff, students, and research);
  • Income from productive activities (knowledge transfer).

The best results were demonstrated by the IKBFU  on "International interaction", which confirms the high degree of integration of the university in the international scientific process: during the period 2015-2019 there were 1507 publications (Scopus) published, 32.5% of which were written in collaboration with international scientists, which is 9.5% higher than the average for Russia.

Alexander Fedorov, Rector of the IKBFU:

Entering one of the most recognized world rankings is certainly a reason to be proud of, and the result of many years of hard work of the University aimed primarily at strengthening the human resource potential of the University by highly competent international specialists. In this direction, the University has placed its bets not on single expensive "known" names, but on inviting promising young research teams - and for now, it has brought the desired result: starting from almost zero positions, this year the IKBFU crossed the threshold of 1000 articles for the five-year period (from 2015 to 2019). Traditionally, the strength of our university is versatile international cooperation. From year to year, the IKBFU is increasing its presence in the international educational market, which contributes to the promotion of the University brand and increases its recognition. In recent years, the share of international students at the IKBFU is constantly growing, and not only due to attracting students from the CIS and neighboring European countries, but also due to the development of Asian (China, India, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan) and South American educational destinations (Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile). Cooperation agreements are concluded with leading educational centers of these countries, double-degree diploma programs are implemented, and academic mobility is annually increased. The IKBFU aims at advanced development, comprehensive internationalization, including through the creation of sustainable partnerships and collaborations in both the East and the West, which is already reflected in the dynamic growth of scientific publications co-authored with international scientists. We are confident that our chosen vector of development, including in the framework of international activities, as well as a presence in the general rating THE, will allow us to achieve our goals and become an educational, scientific and innovation platform uniting Europe and Asia".

Anet Grigoryan, Head of the IKBFU Analytical Center:

“The fact that the IKBFU was included in the institutional ranking of Times Higher Education is undoubtedly an important event for the university. However, it should be understood that the presence in the rating as such has never been an "end in itself" of the IKBFU, it is, rather, one of the representative confirmations of the success that the university has achieved over a specific period of time. Each of the global rankings of universities has its own unique features. The specificity of THE rating is its methodology, which is more focused on the evaluation of the research activities of the university: more than 70% of THE rating indicators take into account the scientific achievements of the university. Despite the fact that the university has demonstrated the best results in the area of international interaction, the most positive dynamics of development is characterized by the research area: income from scientific and experimental design work over the last year has almost tripled compared to the previous year, and the indicators of the university's publication activity, including citations of publications, have been growing at a faster pace for quite a long time. Unfortunately, earlier the university could not claim to be included in the published part of THE WUR because the obligatory condition for that was not fulfilled. Having overcome the barrier of entry, it is expected that the IKBFU will successfully consolidate its positions and further promote itself in the ranking THE WUR - there are all the obvious prerequisites for that”.
