26 December 2017Today, even if you are not a physicist, you are aware of geomagnetic storms. The media regularly report on Sun flashes, which can affect the health of meteosensitive people. However, this problem is not the only one.
The ejection of matter from the solar corona often leads to changes in the speed of the solar wind and, as a consequence, to geomagnetic storms on Earth that cause serious interference in radio communications.
Recently, a group of scientists, which includes Maksim Klimenko, an IKBFU assistant professor of radiophysics and information security, experts from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of Moscow State University (Moscow), IZMIRAN (Kaliningrad), ISFR SB RAS (Irkutsk), Baikal State University (Irkutsk), as well as the National Central University in Taiwan conducted studies into radio and geomagnetic interferences. The scientists attempted to reproduce the parameters of the Earth upper atmosphere in several recent storms dating back to 2008, 2013 and 2915.
Working together with astronomers who warn about another sun flash, Russian physicists are able to create for a global mathematical service for preventing catastrophic consequences, a kind of space emergency ministry that will protect us from particles coming from space during magnetic storms. This study, according to experts, can enable to create empirical and theoretical models of the upper atmosphere in order to predict and explain changes in space weather.
